Thousands Experiencing Electricity in Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Weather Systems

Approximately 25,000 households in Queensland's southeast woke up without power on the start of the week after intense storm systems swept through the region, producing strong winds reaching 109km/h.

Substantial Ice Stones and Extensive Impact

Homeowners reported giant hailstones measuring up to 7cm in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that multiple regions across Queensland had been hit with large hailstones.

This afternoon's storm has severely damaged our power system!

Emergency crews were working to restore electricity service throughout the affected regions, with dozens of response units working to manage the widespread outages.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

Meanwhile, around 1,000 energy customers in Victoria also faced power outages after the capital city recorded its wettest day in 18 months.

State Emergency Services responded to over five hundred emergency reports across the area, mostly for structural issues but also for downed trees and flooding.

Hardest Hit Regions

  • Werribee - saw considerable destruction
  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple assistance requests
  • Wyndham - over 175 calls for assistance

At one point on yesterday, more than twenty-eight thousand energy customers in Victoria were without power.

Climate Outlook

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along much of eastern Queensland this next several days as a atmospheric system continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

Tuesday was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with continued thunderstorm potential anticipated across different parts of both states.

Safety Concern

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the countryside regions, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after historical occurrences where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the state.
